How to rank in towns where you don't have a shop

For mobile detailers, tint shops and PDR techs who serve a wide area: how Google decides who shows up in the next town, and what you can do about it.

How Google picks local results

For local searches Google weighs three things: how relevant your business is to the search, how far you are from the searcher, and how well known you are, which mostly means reviews and links. You can't move your home base, so distance works against you in every town that isn't yours.

That's why the map box in the next town over is hard to win. The normal results below it are a different story: there, a page that's clearly about the search can rank no matter where your van is parked overnight.

Build a page for every town you serve

A page about "mobile detailing in Aurora" can rank for "mobile detailing Aurora". A home page that lists twelve towns in one sentence usually can't rank for any of them.

  • One page per town you really serve, with the town in the title and the address of the page
  • An introduction written for that town: neighborhoods, how often you're there, what people there ask for
  • Your services and prices, and a way to book on the page
  • If you offer several services, pages for your main service in each town rank even better

Don't build doorway pages

Google penalizes pages that exist only to rank: the same text copied fifty times with the town name swapped, or pages for towns you don't serve. They can drag the whole site down.

The rule of thumb: if a customer from that town landed on the page, would it be useful to them? If yes, it's a real page. If it's a copy of every other page, it's a doorway.

Set your service area on Google

In your Google Business Profile, list the towns you actually serve as your service area. It won't win you the map in every town, but it tells Google where you work, and it should match your city pages.

Get reviews that mention the town

When a customer in Lakewood writes "came out to our place in Lakewood, car looks new", that helps. Don't script your customers; just ask them to say what you did and where. Real reviews from real towns build the reputation that distance takes away.

Be patient, and measure

New town pages usually take weeks to a few months to settle in the results, faster in small towns and slower where every shop competes. Check where you rank for your main service in each town once a month, not every day.

On Autobahn and Nordschleife we build a page for every service in every town you serve and send you a monthly report on where you rank in each one.
